As the Red Sox search for Bullpen help Chris Martin is a name to keep an eye on
As the Red Sox continue to improve their roster, one area in need of serious upgrades is the bullpen. In 2022, the Red Sox bullpen was unreliable and dealt with injuries all season. One possible veteran addition is Chris Martin.
The Texas native split time between the Cubs and Dodgers in 2022. After posting an ERA above 4.00 in Chicago, he thrived in LA. He allowed four earned runs in 24.2 innings of work and struck out 34 batters. As the Dodgers' season ended in disappointing fashion, he was crucial in getting LA to the playoffs.
Additionally, he has a track record of success. In seven major league seasons, Martin has a 3.84 ERA. The Arlington High School product has 255 holds on his resume and nine saves. He also is no stranger to the playoffs.
Over the last four seasons, Martin appeared in 15 postseason games. In 14.1 innings of work, he has allowed three earned runs and held opponents to a .222 batting average. Just a few months ago, he recorded the first playoff save of his career.
With Martin now 36 years old, it is unlikely he would command a long-term deal. He has shown he can handle the pressure of a big market and could be a seventh-inning arm on a contending team. The key for Martin will be avoiding the mistakes that plagued him as a Cub.
During his brief time in Chicago, the veteran reliever allowed 38 hits and five home runs. He is at his best when he limits hard contact and keeps opponents off the base paths. Despite his struggles, Martin showed that he still had something left in the tank down the stretch and was a different pitcher.
As the baseball offseason starts to heat up with the Winter Meetings beginning on Sunday, he will be a name to keep an eye on for teams like the Red Sox looking for relief help.
