Red Sox trade Quinn Priester to Brewers for outfield prospect and draft pick
Fresh off a doubleheader sweep, the Red Sox were busy adding depth on Monday morning. They traded RHP Quinn Priester to the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Yophery Rodriguez, a Competitive Balance Round A draft pick, and a player to be named later or cash considerations. The trade gives the Red Sox another intriguing bat full of potential.
Before the trade, Rodriguez was ranked as the seventh-best prospect in the Brewers system. In the first few weeks of the 2025 campaign, the talented 19-year-old has posted a .417 batting average in high-A. In 12 at-bats, he has five hits, including one double.
Since making his professional debut during the 2023 season, Rodriguez has appeared in 165 minor league games. While moving through the Brewers system, he has posted a .254 batting average and stolen 19 bases. He has also shown some power with 59 extra-base hits. Rodriguez will start his tenure with the Red Sox in Greenville.
For the Brewers, Priester provides much-needed pitching depth. They are without Nestor Cortes, Tobias Myers, Aaron Civale, and Brandon Woodruff, who are all on the IL. They now have an experienced arm that can plug into the rotation right away and pitch out of the bullpen.
While Priester was once viewed as a valuable organizational depth piece, he could not carve out a role in Boston. He battled for a rotation spot in spring training but was unable to make the team. Last season with the Red Sox and Pirates, Priester went 3-6 with a 4.71 ERA in 11 appearances. He went 4-2 at Triple-A with a 4.38 ERA in 16 starts.
Although Priester will join his third organization in the last year, he was ranked No. 60 on MLB Pipeline's list of baseball's top prospects two years ago. The Brewers hope they can help him maximize his skillset.
This deal shows how far the Red Sox's depth has come. They have not only added a talented player in Rodriguez but will also have two draft picks in the top 40 this summer. After dealing away a few top prospects over the winter, they are now in a prime position to replenish their farm system as their playoff window opens
