Tyler McDonough made the most of his stint in the AFL

After a solid 2023 campaign, Red Sox prospect Tyler McDonough has continued to work on his game in the Arizona Fall League. The Cincinnati native appeared in 16 games and showed why he has quickly moved through the Red Sox system.

During the regular season, the former third-round pick posted a .250 average in 100 games. While splitting time between Portland and Worcester, McDonough showed some power with 21 extra-base hits. That trend continued in Glendale.

In 71 plate appearances, the 2021 draftee posted a .254 batting average and hit four doubles. McDonough showed great discipline by drawing 11 walks. While he didn’t tear the cover off the ball, McDonough consistently put together good at-bats like he has done his whole minor league career.

As his focus now turns to spring training and the 2024 campaign, McDonough is in unfamiliar territory. After ending last season in Worcester, he is only one call from the majors. The Red Sox infield is also full of question marks. Depending on what additions Craig Breslow makes, McDonough could be a good depth piece when injuries arise.

While a lot will change leading up to opening day, McDonough took advantage of his time in the AFL. He showed some power with two home runs while adding five stolen bases to his resume. If McDonough can continue to improve his game, he could be a prospect to watch during the 2024 season.
