Jake DeBrusk struggling during crucial year
Entering the 2023-2024 campaign, expectations were high for Jake DeBrusk. The former first-round pick was coming off the best season of his career with free agency less than 12 months away. While DeBrusk was expected to be a key source of offense, things have not gone as planned.
In 29 games, the Edmonton native has recorded 11 points and been less aggressive with the puck. After shooting the puck 14.1 percent of the time last season, that number has dropped to 6.2. He only has two points on the power play, which was where he thrived in the past.
While the season is far from over, DeBrusk is on pace to record 33 points. That would be his lowest total since the 2020-2021 campaign. That is far from ideal in a contract year. To get back on track, DeBrusk must rediscover his aggressive style of play.
Although the 27-year-old has been inconsistent, he showed the player he could be less than a year ago. During the 2022-2023 campaign, he set career highs in points with 50 and shots with 191. If he can match that production, the Bruins offense will get a significant boost.
As the postseason draws closer, how Debrusk plays could determine his future in Boston. He has just one point in his last ten games and at times, has made crucial mistakes. Due to the Bruins depth, they are a team with a small margin for error.
Over the next few months, DeBrusk will be watched more closely than ever as he looks to rediscover his 2022-2023 form and make his case to be part of the Bruins longterm plans.
